POLITICIANS are not the only ones trying to create a blueprint for change.

Last Friday, secondary and junior college students presented ideas that they felt would help improve lives through engineering, in a competition called the Create 2010 finals.

The event, held for the first time, was organised by Creators of Tomorrow, a private sector interest group formed by 12 engineers, entrepreneurs and designers based in Singapore.

The prize - a five-day trip to the facilities of automobile company BMW in Munich, Germany - was awarded to Raffles Institution (Junior College) students Ngo Hoang Gia, 18; Quek Keng Yong, 17; and Han Qiao, 19.

NUS High School bags top prizes in Singapore Physics Olympiad in its first showing

CHAMPION: Fiona Foo, 17, was the overall winner.

THE National University of Singapore (NUS) High School has had a stellar first showing in the Singapore Physics Olympiad, bagging the crown as the overall school champion as well as producing the overall winner, 17-year-old Fiona Foo.

Fiona, who bagged the top prize, said she enjoyed being able to pursue something she loved. She prepared for the olympiad during nights in the school hostel with the rest of her classmates.

'We took an elective to prepare for the olympiad and the classes were held at night. It was a relaxed atmosphere and I took it because I enjoyed the subject.

'There was no pressure to perform, getting the top prize was just icing on the cake,' said the only child of an accountant and a businessman, whose favourite topic was quantum information theory.

According to the Institute of Physics Singapore, which organised the competition, the top prize has traditionally been dominated by male students.

The prize presentation was held on Wednesday at Micron Semiconductor Asia. Micron Foundation was the sponsor for the olympiad.

SINGAPORE'S newest medical school, the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, has picked its inaugural batch of 54 students out of more than 800 A-list applicants.

The school, being set up by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Imperial College London, said that besides stellar academic qualifications, those chosen had shown the potential to be outstanding patient-centred doctors.

The school shortlisted 440 to attend eight interviews with health-care professionals such as nurses as well as members of the public, who assessed the candidates from the patient's perspective.

Those who made the inaugural batch - all Singaporeans - had almost perfect scores in the interviews and also aced their British BioMedical Admissions Test. Two out of three students are A-level holders and 90 per cent of them are among the top in their cohort.

Singapore Ranked First at International Physics Olympiad

SINGAPORE: Singapore has been ranked first at the International Physics Olympiad.

The Singapore team received five gold medals and was placed first out of 84 countries at the event held in Bangkok, Thailand from July 10 to 18.

The Ministry of Education said this was an improvement over Singapore's 7th placing last year.

The other teams that received five gold medals were from China, Korea and Taiwan.

The Singapore gold medallists are Kang Zi Yang, Li Kewei, Lin Jiahuang and Lin Sen of Raffles Institution; and Tan Zong Xuan of NUS High School of Mathematics and Science.
