Meeting R.I.'s former principal Mr. Sigamoney again after a quarter-of-a-century was an overwhelming experience. Mr. Sigamoney was the best physics teacher Mr. Phang has ever had, when Mr. Sigamoney taught for a few months due to staff shortage.

Click on Hongjie's photo to see his H3 physics project which won one of  three SSEF 2009 Gold Awards in physics; NTU Nanyang Concept Test (Physics) High Distinction Award and Medal 2009.

Teacher's Day present - "Junior Hammer" (above) - for Mr. Phang to "threaten" Sec 3 & 4 students who make mistakes. This is different from Fiona's "Blood-Stained Magical Sword" (below) - which's for JC1 and 2 students.

Note: The "blood" is actually some red ink from a white board marker.

Teacher's Day 2009

The student in white at the centre of the photo was in JC1 in 2009, one year younger than the others, in case you know him and are wondering. Nevertheless, he scored 3rd in Mr. Phang's JC2 Physics Concept Test 2009. Hongjie again appeared at the bottom-left corner of the photo.

(This is a challenging physics concept test for all JC2 students, spanning the entire 'A' level syllabus from classical to quantum physics, although some of the students attending Mr. Phang's JC2 class are actually younger than JC2 (in red)).

Is it scary to learn together with some of these very brilliant students? Of course not.
There is a saying "you can't soar like an eagle if you hang out with turkeys";
or the equivalent Chinese saying "近朱者赤" (those who mix with a red pigment will turn red).
This is best illustrated by the following two students from Dunman High who gave Mr. Phang this Teacher's Day present.

Kang Lin attended Mr. Phang's physics tuition first and introduced two of her schoolmates. One of them's face turned pale on the first lesson and quit. The other student, Jinghuan, also turned pale but persevered. Here is Jinghuan's testimonial after she scored an 'A' for her A-Level Physics.

"Thank you so much for pushing my Physics scores to an A! ... My Physics had been fluctuating between C and U before I joined ... Thinking back, my initial lessons were absolutely nightmarish ... as my foundation was rather weak. The speed was punishing ... p.s. Advice from Phang alumni to prospective students: Don't give up after the first lesson! (however tempting it is.)".

Jinghuan, Dunman High, 2009

"It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer."
Albert Einstein
